THE ROUTE WILL BE MARKED FROM THE DAY BEFORE BUT IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!! (Maps to Follow) The Run: The run takes you on a lap of the camping field to exit at the far side, past the bike exit. Descend down through the woods (can be muddy and steep) to a road by the Giants Seat Garden Centre and turn left. Follow this road for approx. quarter of a mile where it becomes a dirt track. Follow this ignoring any turnings off until a wide left turn is reached. This section has mountain bikers on it so please keep left. Turn left up this to ascend to the Outwood Trail. Turn left, keeping to the footpath rather than the bridle way, which runs alongside. Carry along this main route keeping to the path, passing the turn off for the bike and then where the bikes rejoin the same route. Keeping to the path, run past the left sandy turn off for the bikes (there may be bikes coming from behind and turning left at this point so be aware!) to a set of steps ascending the banking on the left. Ascend these and then turn left to join the main track entering the campsite. Be aware again as mountain bikers will be joining this track from the left so please run on the right! On entering the campsite follow the marshal’s instructions to transition. |
Transition
|
Transition: This is where your bike will be kept whilst running. Whenever moving your bike ensure your helmet is fastened on your head as not doing so results in being stopped to do so and if ignored, a two minute penalty is incurred. Do not ride in transition but follow the marshal's instructions out of transition, running with your bike to the mount area where you can start cycling. The route goes out of the far end of Transition, onto the bike course.
|
The Bike Bit:
This route is subject to change according to conditions on the day and permissions! Remember that some of
the route is open to the public so be careful and alert!
Again head out of transition the same way as the run went, doing an extended lap of the field to take the first exit signed for the bikers.
Follow the route through some tricky singletrack and a big bomb hole (big dip in the ground) to the same track you ran along. Turn left and
follow it the same but instead of taking the first left as in the run, continue forward to the next left and ascend a narrow hill to the Outwood
trail. At the top turn right across the M60 on a cycle bridge to enter Philips Park. At the end of the bridge, turn right and descend the path to
where 2 paths cross. Turn left under the bridge and turn right for approx. 100 metres to a water crossing. Cross this and follow the direction arrows
as the course takes you diagonally across an open area. Turn left at OS 799034 on the Sustrans Trail to then take the next left then right to return to
the original arch via once again the sustrans cycle route. At the bridge
turn right and climb up to the deserted car park for Philips Park to ascend it to the top entrance. Here, turn sharp right and descend down a singletrack
path (one drop off of about half a foot down this bit!) to then turn left and loop back up the old carriageway. The route then takes you up the tarmac drive
exiting Philips Park, and turn left onto a tarmac road (Philips Park Road). Follow this road as it becomes cobbles and descends to a path. Caution on this
as it does have a rain gulley in it and also at the bottom there is a sharp right turn onto Outwood Trail. Follow the trail for approx. half a mile, keeping to the
right in the wider places on the bridle way. Here, turn right through a dismantled fence to ascend to the ‘plantation’(Hurst Wood). After completing nearly a lap of this
(the path is made of gravel and is undulating!) descend once again to the Outwood Trail, turning right to the sandy ascent on the left to the main track into
Giants seat campsite. Be aware that there may be runners coming from the right! Enter the campsite and transition under the marshal’s direction.
The Second Run:
Is the same as the first run. Beware that by this time on some of the wider tracks you will be
sharing with bikers taking part in the 12 hour bike race! The finish back at the camping field. Rules
